Enuncial

A reimagining of Visigothic Uncial for the modern age

Calligraphic warmth captured an early medieval spirit with truly extensive character support

(Note: Enuncial is still very much under development. Both character support and the spacing between letters has not been finalised and some combinations may be quite off. Character designs are still subject to change. The assignment of Stylistic Set and Character Variants is subject to change. Furthermore, not all glyphs may be present in every release. The glyphs used to represent numbers on this page are also not the standard numbers in Enuncial but smaller alternates.)

Enuncial is intended to have a proper Italics, Bold and Bold Italic weights but these will have to come later. Fake italics are currently used on this page. Certain glyphs may have coloured variants in the future if that how to position them so they are properly imported can be figured out.

A profile of Enuncial will be added soon.

Status Report

  • 7181 glyphs are ready for final kerning adjustments
  • Completed: Analytical Engine, Jacquard Loom Code, 1728 Falcon Loom Code, Braille Patterns, Box Drawing, Optical Character Recognition, Control Codes

  • 38 glyphs currently included from the Medieval Unicode Font Initiative
  • 398 additional glyphs to be included in the Private Use Area
  • (Additions are extra symbols/pictographs, extra shapes, precomposed diacritics, including for conlang usage and archaic forms, including Greek ligatures.
  • There are also added stylistic and positional variations for symbols/pictographs.)

  • cv02: Alternate Capital M & W Forms: 26 (For use in advanced maths)
  • cv03: Diacritically Aligned Alternates: 38 (Switches to an alternate 'i' and 'j' where the dot harmonises with the diacritic dot)

  • to place musical symbols on the standard five-line musical staff. Other height variants are available via the Music Scribe Stylistic Set,
  • where the standard character for a musical symbol followed by a number and two periods will map to a relevant variant.
  • For symbols that have one variant per staff, i.e. barlines, these can also be accessed by the Combining Heights Stylistic Sets.
  • This allows for quickly moving from one staff type to another as the note positions remain constant. This can also be done toggle ledger lines for.
  • to notes that are inside, say a five-line staff but outside a three-line staff.)
  • cv15: Smart Quotes: 4
  • (Toggles a feature to conditionally convert quotation marks to primes and double primes when used after numbers. This feature can be safely left on.)
  • cv16: Smart Quote Correction: 11
  • (Smart Quotes is when typewriter quotes or straight quotes, which for historical reasons are still directly input from the keyboard,
  • are automatically converted to typographic quote or curly quotes. This sometimes goes wrong, as the wrong direction for the
  • typographic quotes is picked. This feature allows for a manual override of Smart Quotes and also includes shortcut combinations
  • for more obscure primes and reversed primes which is to be turned on as needed to avoid inadvertantly triggering replacements.)
  • cv22: Leader Glyphs: 36 (Used for Table of Contents and for section dividers)
  • cv23: Overlines: 78 (Precomposed overline variants to ensure support for overlines when not implemented by software)
